A child’s first experience at the dentist’s office largely impacts the way he or she will feel about these appointments in the future, so let us help make the first visit enjoyable and leave your kids looking forward to their next checkup!

After completing dental school, our team of pediatric dentists have undergone several years of specialized training, gaining both knowledge and experience in treating infants, children and adolescents.

Their expertise in childhood development and behavior means that they are well-equipped to not only address your child’s dental needs, but also understand and help your young ones feel comfortable. We are passionate about providing top-notch dental care for your children and helping them develop good oral hygiene habits to set them up for a lifetime of dental health and wellness.

The First Visit

We want your children to love coming to see us! From the moment you arrive at our office, our kind, comforting staff are all about putting you and your child at ease. Since the first primary teeth begin to erupt between 6 and 12 months of age, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children have their first dental visit by the time they turn one year old. Whatever age your child is when you schedule the first visit, it is usually short and simple, aimed at getting to know your child and providing some basic information about dental care. Our team will check your child’s teeth for placement and health and will look for any potential problems with the gums and jaw. If necessary, we may do a bit of cleaning. We will also provide you with some materials containing helpful tips to refer to at home and answer any questions you have about how to care for your child’s teeth as they develop.

Tips for Preparing

Like all of us, children can often fear the unknown. This is why we believe it is so important to familiarize your child with the dentist before the first visit. Discussing what the appointment will be like, reading books about the topic, coloring dental-themed pictures, and letting them look at photos of our staff online are great ways to help them feel comfortable before they even arrive. Children pick up on the attitudes of their parents quickly, so one of the best things you can do is maintain a positive attitude and avoid any negative, apprehensive comments about trips to the dentist. Remember that our dentists are specially trained to handle fears and anxieties and all of our staff excels at creating a warm, inviting environment.

Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits at Home

Children are at a high risk for tooth decay simply because many have not established a good oral hygiene routine. This simple step is crucial to your child’s oral health. To set them up for a lifetime of dental wellness, begin a brushing routine as soon as your child’s first teeth begin to come in. Use a soft-bristled brush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste (unless otherwise directed by a healthcare professional, do not use fluoride toothpaste for children under two) after each meal and before bedtime, as the sugars found in food and drink can cause decay. Flossing is also an important part of maintaining dental health. During your child’s first visit, our knowledgeable staff will discuss with you when to begin this important step. Examine teeth every two weeks to watch for lines and discoloration that may be caused by decay. If you notice any such visible signs, be sure to call our office.

Routine Dental Care

In addition to a strong oral hygiene routine, dental exams and cleanings every six months can help to protect your child’s smile. Our comforting staff are specially trained to professionally clean teeth to make sure that all plaque is carefully removed. We also recommend highly effective preventative measures to keep your child’s mouth happy and healthy, such as fluoride treatments twice a year and tooth sealants to protect the hard-to-reach areas of your child’s teeth where decay often originates. Dental x-rays are a very helpful tool for us to monitor the health and alignment of your child’s teeth and jaw. We recommend having a minimal first set of x-rays taken between ages 2 and 3 with other x-rays to follow as your child’s mouth grows and changes. Should a dental issue arise, you can rest easy as our years of experience and advanced know-how are able to restore your family’s oral health quickly and efficiently.
