Crowns and onlays (partial crowns) are a cosmetic restoration used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. They are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or partially destroyed by tooth decay and when insufficient strength remains to hold a filling.

In order to produce a crown that will look, feel and function like your original tooth, it is created in a lab using an impression of your own, unique tooth. This allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your tooth, bite and jaw movements. Your customized crown is then sculpted from porcelain (for many, this is the material of choice as it mimics a natural tooth in color, translucency and strength), metal or a combination of both. Finally, the crown is “cemented” onto an existing tooth to cover all of the surface above the gum line. Not only does a crown improve your appearance, it can also relieve pain, help you avoid further damage and protects the integrity of surrounding teeth.
